So tonight I made my 7 year old cry before going to bed. I had no idea that I never explained that dogs don’t live as long as us. We got to giggling about him calling Tillie a toddler. Then he said ‘she’s 21 in dog years!’ … ‘why do they do dog years?’ ‘Well.. because i guess our life span is 7 times theirs… Tillie is only going to live for about 10 more years or so’ .. que HUGE tears from my son I had to sit and hold him and Tillie for a few minutes while we both cried over it they truly have a brother sister love!Lol i didn’t expect so many people to react to this so quickly! He’s definitely not new to death with animals! But i guess he’s never thought about his best friend leaving him so soon we’ve had her since he was 4 and she has to sleep with him every night. If he is at my parents, she whines until i open his door! I explained that this just gives us a new perspective on how to love her, and any other pets we get! And that i cry often, thinking about her passing one day It’s especially hard to lose a childhood dog. He will lose her just as he’s coming out of high school.
