Yesterday was National puppy day and I was thinking about how much dogs support so many of us in our grief. Many grievers have gotten a dog for their heartbroken family after the loss.
I have counseled many grieving children who pleaded with their surviving parent for a dog as they were so sad after the loss of their other parent or sibling. I have met with many bereaved parents who say without their loving dog they would be so isolated and lonely and wouldn’t feel a reason to get out of bed. The dog supports them in sadness and gets them outside in the fresh air too.
I have met many widows and widowers who share with me photos of their beloved pets who keep them company especially at night when they are so lonesome. I have sat with clients over the years who have shared about the loss of a loved one and later in the session talked about the loss of a beloved pet. And how their heart still aches. I have sat with many grievers who have shared how their loved one who has died left behind a pet.
