Oymyakon, in eastern Siberia, Russia, holds the title of being the coldest inhabited place on Earth, with a recorded minimum temperature of -71.7°C. Its name, which means “water that doesn’t freeze,” comes from the nearby hot springs. With a population of around 450 people, this small town is famous for having recorded the lowest temperature ever measured in a human settlement, surpassing even the extreme temperatures of Antarctica.
